Quick advice to help you pack efficiently, stay organized, and get the most out of your storage unit.
Plan for Accessibility
Place frequently used items near the front of your unit and leave walkways for easy access.
Keep an Inventory
Create a list of all stored items, including photos and serial numbers, and store it safely or in a secure deposit box.
Protect Against Moisture
Use pallets to elevate your belongings off the floor and also storing in plastic totes or bins will help.
No Combustibles Allowed
Never store flammable or hazardous items such as gasoline, paint, solvents, lithium ion batteries, or thinners.
Use Uniform Boxes
Choose boxes or plastic bins of similar size for efficient stacking. Ensure each can safely hold 25–30 lbs without overloading.
Label Every Box
List the contents on all four sides, number your boxes, and seal them securely with tape.
Pack Dishes with Care
Wrap dishes and glassware in paper or bubble wrap and pack them in sturdy boxes, and place those boxes on top.
Wrap Pictures and Mirrors
Use bubble wrap and cardboard to protect framed items and store them standing upright.
Maximize Furniture Space
Use drawers to store smaller items like silverware and photos. Wrap in towels or linens for protection.
Use Appliances for Storage
Large appliances can hold towels, linens, or clothes. Add mothballs to help deter pests.
Store Yard Tools Efficiently
Place rakes, shovels, and hoses inside clean trash cans and stack empty cans together.
Disassemble Furniture
Remove table legs to prevent damage and save space during storage.
Store Sofas Vertically
Place sofas and love seats on their ends to conserve space. Use covers or plastic wrap to protect cushions.
Cover Furniture Properly
Place blankets and/or plastic sheet covers over stuffed or upholstered furniture to shield against dust.
Store Mattresses Upright
Use plastic mattress bags or covers. Stand mattresses on their side with proper support using headboards and side rails to maintain shape.
Pack Smart, Not Big
Rent the smallest unit that fits your needs, and pack it efficiently while keeping walkways clear.
Avoid Damage to Furniture
Do not place heavy or sharp items on upholstered furniture. Cover lightly with blankets and/or plastic covers and sheets. Add dryer sheets for freshness.
Use a Secure Lock
Invest in a quality lock and store the key in a safe, memorable place.
No Food or Perishables
Do not store food to avoid attracting bugs or rodents. Use mothballs as an extra deterrent.
Store Electronics Safely
Place TVs and electronics on sturdy furniture like dressers, at the back of your unit, and cover for protection.
